Preparing Your Home for Deck Staining: Furniture, Access and Pets
Once professional deck restoration and staining is planned, preparing your home means organizing the household around the work—not starting surface preparation yourself. Confirm who will move deck contents, how everyone will enter and leave the house, where pets will stay and how deliveries will reach you without crossing the work area.
Steve’s Services provides complete deck restoration and staining services to homeowners in the North Shore Massachusetts area. The checklist below focuses on household readiness after the work is agreed. Furniture handling, crew access and return-to-use instructions still need confirmation for your project.
Confirm the plan before moving or cleaning anything
Ask the contractor to confirm the expected start, how schedule changes will be communicated and what needs to be ready before arrival. Weather may affect the plan, so coordinate household arrangements around the confirmed schedule rather than assuming an earlier discussion is final.
Separate tasks you can arrange from tasks that need direction. You can notify household members, plan another entrance and update delivery instructions. Before moving heavy contents or doing any cleaning, ask what the contractor expects. Do not add washing, sanding, stripping or other surface work unless it has been specifically agreed.
Agree who will move furniture and where it will go
Review everything occupying the deck: chairs, tables, cushions, rugs, planters, storage boxes, toys and cooking equipment. Ask which items must be removed, who is responsible and when removal should happen. Do not assume furniture moving is included in the agreed work.
- Choose a storage location that does not block household exits, walkways, gates or the contractor’s access route.
- Flag heavy, fragile or attached items before anyone tries to move them. Arrange suitable help rather than attempting a lift you cannot safely manage.
- Ask about items connected to fuel, electricity or water. Do not disconnect equipment or remove attached fixtures without appropriate direction.
- Keep everyday belongings accessible elsewhere so nobody needs to enter the work area to retrieve them.
Plan a safe alternate household route
If a deck door or staircase is part of your normal route, ask when it will be unavailable. Walk through the alternate route with household members before work begins. Consider anyone using a mobility aid, carrying groceries or helping a child outside, and tell the contractor about access needs that affect the plan.
Note Do not block your only safe exit. If there is no suitable alternate route, resolve access with the contractor before work begins. Household preparation does not establish that the deck or its stairs are structurally safe.
Agree how doors leading onto the deck will be identified as unavailable without compromising emergency exit access. Make sure everyone understands the restriction, including household members who may return while work is underway.
Keep pets and children separate from the work area
Arrange a supervised space away from the deck, tools and crew access route. For pets, plan how they will go outside without using the deck. Tell the contractor about pets and ask whether the work requires additional arrangements; a closed door alone should not be treated as confirmation that every separation need is covered.
Move pet bowls and children’s outdoor belongings to their temporary locations before access is restricted. Explain the boundary to children and caregivers, and arrange supervision rather than relying on a reminder sign. Ask for project- and product-specific guidance before allowing either children or pets back onto the deck.
Redirect deliveries and visitors
Update delivery instructions to identify an accessible entrance and package location that do not require crossing the deck. Notify expected visitors and anyone who normally uses the deck entrance. Include grocery deliveries, pet care and other household appointments in that plan.
If you use a temporary sign, make its direction specific: identify the entrance visitors should use, not just the area to avoid. Keep packages and waiting visitors out of the agreed crew route. If no suitable delivery route exists, arrange a different handoff or postpone the delivery.
Confirm contractor access and the household contact
Ask which entrance or gate the contractor needs, whether anyone must be home and whether any household-controlled access or utilities are required. Confirm the arrangement rather than leaving doors unlocked or assuming indoor access is necessary. Share any agreed access details directly, not on a public sign.
Designate a household contact who can respond to schedule or access questions. Make sure that person knows the furniture plan, pet arrangements and alternate entrance. If your project is with Steve’s Services, contact Steve’s Services to confirm unresolved preparation details before work begins.
Wait for instructions before reopening the deck
Do not use appearance or touch as permission to resume normal deck use. Ask the contractor for instructions specific to the work, product and conditions. Clarify permission for walking on the deck separately from permission to replace furniture, planters, rugs or other contents.
Keep the alternate entrance, pet arrangements and delivery directions in place until the relevant restrictions are lifted. If conditions change or the instructions are unclear, ask before reopening access or moving belongings back.
Final household-readiness checklist
- Confirm the start plan, homeowner responsibilities and method for communicating changes.
- Agree who moves deck contents and choose storage outside exits and access routes.
- Resolve safe household entry and exit before any route becomes unavailable.
- Arrange pet and child separation, supervision and an alternate outdoor route where needed.
- Redirect deliveries, visitors and household appointments away from the deck.
- Confirm contractor access and identify the household contact for questions.
- Obtain specific instructions for reopening access and returning each type of deck content.
